About the Event

Join One Journey on Facebook Live this Thursday 8/6 as we with partner with Syrian Youth Empowerment to bring you a discussion on their important work preparing youth in Syria and Iraq for higher education. Hear about their work firsthand from all levels of the organization during this discussion between one of the organization's founders, an SYE alum currently attending Harvard, and a mentee in the process of applying to colleges!

The Syrian Youth Empowerment (SYE) Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded and led by Syrian refugees who experienced firsthand the enormous challenges associated with continuing higher education both inside and outside of Syria. SYE empowers youth in conflict zones by providing a path to education, allowing them to realize their potential and define their roles in their countries, societies, and the world. Their innovative approach utilizes one-on-one mentoring of Syrian students who are in the college application process, preparing them to be strong candidates for competitive universities both in the US and around the world, and ensuring they will receive the financial support they need to successfully attend these universities.

Mentors support students in preparing for standardized tests including: (1) the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and TOEFL, (2) writing application essays, (3) obtaining necessary documents, and (4) applying for visas. SYE students have successfully gained admissions, with full scholarships, to universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
